Macon County - Tornado History |

Springtime brings the risk of severe weather back to Macon County. With the severe weather, the chance of tornados also increases in the upcoming months. The months of March to August are the primary months of tornadic activity in Illinois, while the months of April, May, and June bring the highest threat. While tornados can happen at ANY time of day, the hours of noon to midnight, with 6pm being the peak, are the main times tornados strike. Since 1950, Macon County has had 51 confirmed tornados causing 21.6 million dollars in property damage, injuring 73 people, with only one fatality. 1974 was the most tornadic year for Macon County with 14 confirmed, including an F3. 2006 was ranked second with 8 reported. In the 35 county warning area of the Lincoln Office of the National Weather Service, Macon County is ranked 5th for most tornados (51), while McLean is first with 97 (McLean is also the largest county in Illinois). In terms of tornados per 100 square miles, Macon County is 6th with 6.09 tornados per square mile. |
